Course Summary
This course will run as an additional (fourth) A-level. It places emphasis on mathematical and statistical problem solving and is intended for:
- students taking A-level courses for whom A-level Maths is not appropriate
- students who need support with Maths for A-level studies. For example, in Business, Chemistry, Economics, Geography, IT, Psychology, Sociology or Health and Social Care
- students who need to continue with some form of Maths because they intend to enter a teacher training or health care professional course
The course will focus on problem solving skills and strategies, application of mathematical and statistical thinking and reasoning to solve real life problems, competency in interpreting and explaining solutions of problems in context.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
Paper 1 Assesses:
- Analysis of Data
- Maths for Personal Finance
- Estimation
AND
Paper 2 (students take one paper only) either:
2A Assesses:
- Critical analysis of given data and models including spreadsheets and tabular data
- Statistical Techniques
or 2B Assesses:
- Critical analysis of given data and models including spreadsheets and tabular data
- Critical path and risk analysis
or 2C Assesses:
- Critical analysis of given data and models including spreadsheets and tabular data
- Graphical Techniques
Entry requirements
The minimum requirement is 7 GCSE or equivalent passes at grades 9-4 in an appropriate range of subjects, including Maths and English Language at grade 4 or above.
The college will accept one BTEC at Merit level as one GCSE equivalent.
