Course Summary

Film Studies is a great subject for anyone who enjoys watching, producing and analysing film.

You will explore a variety of films from different periods, from the Silent era to the Golden Age of Hollywood, through to New Wave and Contemporary cinema. So, for example, you might compare a 1940s classic like "Casablanca" with a 1960s New Wave film such as "Bonnie and Clyde", or the Mexican "Pan's Labyrinth" and the South Korean "Parasite". The course includes British, European and Global films, as well as mainstream and independent Hollywood.

Coursework involves either making or screenwriting a short film. There is also a photo storyboard and an analysis.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

The course has two exams at the conclusion of Year 13.

Coursework consists of screenwriting or making a short film and writing an analysis of it.

Entry requirements

The minimum requirement is 7 GCSE or equivalent passes at grades 9-4 in an appropriate range of subjects, including Maths and English Language at grade 4 or above.

The college will accept one BTEC at Merit level as one GCSE equivalent.

You could take this course with many other advanced level courses such as Media, Photography or English, to prepare for higher education in related courses or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into employment related to film, such as working within a Film or TV crew. The course also helps you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for, especially in the media and production industries.
