A Level English Language and Literature

This course gives you the opportunity to develop as a reflective reader and writer, exploring the relationship between language and literature and developing writing for a range of purposes and audiences.

You will study a range of literary and non-literary texts written in a range of contexts. Examples of set texts include: The Color Purple, Kindertransport, Othello and In Cold Blood.

You will also have the opportunity to focus in detail on a genre such as crime, gothic or science fiction and to produce some creative writing in this genre.

Most lessons will involve group discussion within a small, supportive environment, allowing you to try out new ideas and learn from your peers.

You will be expected to read widely around the set texts and to carry out some research into the texts’ literary and historical context.

• 80% examination
• 20% non-examined assessment

The non-examined element of this qualification entails producing a portfolio of 3200-3500 words. This will include a 1500-word genre study and two pieces of creative writing, one must be literary in style, the other non-literary.

You will also sit three examinations, one on each of the three components of this course:

• Poetry and Prose
• Drama

The minimum requirement is 7 GCSE or equivalent passes at grades 9-4 in an appropriate range of subjects, including Maths at grade 4 or above.

The college will accept one BTEC at Merit level as one GCSE equivalent.

Subject specific:
English Language and Literature requires GCSE grade 6 or above in English Language and Literature.

You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses, which could lead onto higher education in English Language and Literature studies or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a related profession such as a teacher, journalist or author. You could also go straight into employment, as the A-level course is a recognised qualification that will help you to develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for.
