A Level Religion, Philosophy and Ethics

Religion, Philosophy and Ethics at A-level gives students the opportunity to look more deeply into the beliefs and cultures of the world in which we live. Students explore issues from a variety of standpoints and learn to analyse, defend and evaluate philosophers as well as their own ideas.

Special attention is given to the skills needed for good essay writing and textual commentary. The teaching methods include questions, discussion, reading, group work, presentations, watching videos and reading articles.

For A-level the AQA Religious Studies (7062) syllabus is used, consisting of three areas of study: Christianity, Philosophy and Ethics.

100% Examination

Students will study Christianity as part of the course. Students are expected to sit only internal exams at the end of year one and the whole A-level grade will be based on the exams sat at the end of year two.

The minimum requirement is 7 GCSE or equivalent passes at grades 9-4 in an appropriate range of subjects, including Maths and English Language at grade 4 or above.

The college will accept one BTEC at Merit level as one GCSE equivalent.

Where a student continues on to an A-level from a GCSE subject, it is advisable for a student to have a minimum of a grade 5.

You could take this course with other advanced level courses as a general preparation for a higher education course or as a foundation for studying Ethics, Theology or Politics, Philosophy and Ethics (PPE). With further training this could lead to careers in journalism, teaching, civil service, public relations, advertising and much more.

As with the other humanities, a Religious Studies qualification is a good foundation for entering employment, as it helps you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for, especially in sectors where people are the main focus.

In addition, this subject explores topics from different ethical viewpoints and this skill is something which is highly valued within professions like the health service, legal profession and law enforcement to mention but a few.
