Course Summary

For young people interested in a career in engineering who intend to access level 2 qualifications or a level 2 apprenticeship but need a comprehensive learning programme at level 1 before they will be ready to access level 2
This qualification provides you with a comprehensive range of introductory skills, as well as core knowledge, relevant to engineering, alongside generic employability skills which are needed both in engineering and across other sectors.

The learners must take the following mandatory units:
• Working Safely in Engineering
• Using Mathematics and Science in Engineering
• Optional units include knowledge and skills.
• electronic assembly,
• welding,
• CAD

Alongside generic employability skills (such as time-management and effective communication in the workplace).
Health and safety is of paramount importance in all areas of Engineering and this will be reinforced throughout the course. Vocational core skills of English and Maths will be embedded in the programme along with specialist delivery to enable learners to reach GCSE grade 4 or equivalent standards to meet industry requirements.

In addition to the Specialist skills described above, we will help you to develop a range of wider skills that will make you into a well-rounded professional who will be highly valued by employers. During tutorials we will develop your Employability skills, Personal Learning, Social and Community skills and together with your Specialist skills and qualification, this will give you a distinct advantage when it is time for you to progress to employment or further and higher education.

Skills you can gain include:

• Interview techniques
• Customer service
• Maths and English skills needed in day to day life
• Self-study and research
• Team working to complete projects

You can also develop your entrepreneurial skills through charitable and community projects which run throughout the year and are led by students.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Learning takes place through a variety of theory and practical lessons. Students will also need to carry out personal research to enable them to successfully complete the course and guidance on this will be given by the course tutors.

Your skills and knowledge will be continuously assessed throughout the course; additionally each unit will be assessed by end multiple choice examinations and practical tests.

Support will be provided through regular meetings with your course tutor.

Entry requirements

To access this course you will need GCSEs at grade 2 or above in Maths and English, general education and a keen interest in engineering. In addition to the entry qualifications listed, the offer of a place on the course is subject to the outcomes of initial assessment, which will be taken at the College as part of the admissions process. Please note that entry criteria may vary quite significantly between courses at the same level. This is to take account of the specific skills needed for success on particular courses, the length of the course and the requirements for progression to the next level. Entry criteria are given as a guide, and the exact requirements in order to obtain a place on a particular course will be confirmed following attendance at a Welcome Event/Interview.

Your next steps...

The learners can progress to a level 2 Certificate or Diploma in Engineering, including Level 2 Certificate and Diploma in Skills for Engineering and other level 2 qualifications such as Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Welding and Fabrication, Performing Engineering Operations, and Technical Certificates in Engineering.
