Thinking about a career in the Beauty Therapy?
The Beauty Therapy Industry can be demanding career, requiring good health, stamina, a capacity for hard work, a pleasant personality and the ability to get on with people. If you think that you possess these qualities, you want to learn a range of industry skills and you have a genuine interest in this career route then this course is for you. The course also consists of GCSE English & Maths lessons for those not already at a grade 4, and all students study ACE and Century lessons to ensure they are continuously developing their English & maths skills in a contextualised manner, so you leave us with the best possible skills required by employers.
The course will provide you with knowledge, skills and professional behaviours relevant to Beauty Industry requirements, many of the underpinning skills will also be relevant in a wide range of customer service settings and are therefore transferable.
There will also be opportunities to enter competitions, listen to guest speakers and attend trips to hair and beauty exhibitions.
Kit and Uniform - You will need to purchase a kit and uniform before the start of the programme, the Level 1 mandatory kit and uniform will cost around £250 subject to change slightly with inflation.
30 hours work placement in the commercial environment is part of your course, which helps you to develop real life working skills and employability.
Course Details
Course content can include:
Understanding skin structure and the science of how it reacts to a variety of treatments & products.
Client care & consultation skills including skin & lifestyle analysis.
Basic skin & hand care,
Manicure & pedicure,
Basic & photographic make-up,
Nail art or face painting
Creating total looks based on themes or colours.
All L1 theory is assessed by assignments, you will therefore need to allow time for home study. Any L2 units within the qualification can be assessed by online multiple choice tests.
We will introduce you to an industry, where professionalism, creativity and artistry combined with technical skills provide an excellent service experience for your clients. You will develop the behaviours and attitudes expected of a professional beauty therapist, from the reception desk to the salon floor.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
The programme is delivered using various learning styles, mainly focusing on demonstration with opportunities to practise.
• You will begin by working on each other
• You may experience working on members of the public who also act as clients
• You will work within our modern, well equipped salons which provide a realistic commercial setting
in which you can gain experience in dealing with clients
• Relevant theory is covered alongside the practical topic
The skills you are learning should be practised outside college in order to develop and progress, and your practical skills will be supplemented with theoretical study necessary to successfully complete the assessments. You will also need to complete some form of work experience for a minimum of 5 days.
You will need to set time aside at home to work on your portfolio.
Assessment will take place in The Park where the college's beauty salons are based.
You will have the opportunity to use an extensive range of high quality beauty products and excellent new specialist equipment.
You will be expected to demonstrate your competence in all units to the standard required in industry.
Assessment takes place throughout the programme by a variety of methods including:
• practical assessment
• oral assessment
• written assessment
• projects
• completion of a portfolio
• completion of a log book
There will be an independent assessment paper relating to treatment knowledge, which will be externally set and marked.
Entry requirements
You will need 2 GCSEs at grade 2 (E) or above. Potential candidates must demonstrate their commitment and enthusiasm towards a career within the Hair industry. Each candidate will be considered on their experience, suitability, school reference showing good attendance and behaviour and a practical aptitude test.
Your interview and the college Welcome Events, will provide you with information about:
• The equipment and salon uniform you will need before the start of the course.
• Career paths and further courses available, and give us a chance to get to know you.
If successful in gaining a place you will be required to attend two consecutive Taster Days during the summer, to give you a feel for the course you have chosen.
In addition to the entry qualifications listed, the offer of a place on the course is subject to the outcomes of initial assessment, which will be taken at the College as part of the admissions process. Please note that entry criteria may vary quite significantly between courses at the same level. This is to take account of the specific skills needed for success on particular courses, the length of the course and the requirements for progression to the next level. Entry criteria are given as a guide, and the exact requirements in order to obtain a place on a particular course will be confirmed following attendance at a Welcome Event/Interview.
