Course Summary

Do you enjoy independent problem solving and working things out for yourself? Do you enjoy practical science and want to learn how to use advanced scientific equipment like oscilloscopes, lasers and radioactive materials? Do you enjoy thinking about the big questions of life, time and the universe? Then Physics is for you! Physics is all about the fundamental laws which govern how the world works. Through careful experimentation, research and analysis you will come to understand these laws, and in doing so enhance your appreciation of the world around you.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

This course is assessment through written examinations. Students will also complete practical activities for which competency in different skills will be assessed. The students will be awarded a competency mark for their practical skills (Pass or Fail) in addition to their A-level grade (A*- E).

Entry requirements

Students will need to meet the entry requirements of their chosen pathway:

Pathway 1: Five or more GCSE grades 5-9 (including English Language and Maths) for an A-level study programme

Pathway 2: Five or more GCSE grades 5-9 (aiming for a 5 in English Language and Maths) to study two A-level subjects and one Level 3 Diploma/AAQ

Pathway 3: Five or more GCSE grades 4-9 (resitting English Language or Maths if needed) to study one A-level and two Level 3 Diplomas/AAQs or three Level 3 Diplomas/AAQs

Additional entry requirements for this course:

Grade 5 in GCSE Maths, Grade 6 in GCSE Physics or Grade 6/6 in GCSE Combined Science

Your next steps...

Physics A-level is an excellent preparation for a broad range of higher education study and scientific apprenticeships. Many students follow this course with a physics related degree. The course also has clear links with a range of other subjects which are popular degree courses such as mathematics, medicine, computing, engineering (electronics, mechanical) and architecture.
