Course Summary
The A-Level French course develops essential language skills, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing, while also broadening students’ understanding of the cultures and societies where French is spoken. These skills are strengthened through in-depth research and discussion of various topics in both written and spoken French, making the course ideal for students with a keen interest in international cultures and linguistics.

A-Level French is a new addition to the Samuel Ward Sixth Form course offer for September 2026 and we hope to receive sufficient applications to create a viable course. Course Details
How will it be delivered and assessed?
Students are assessed (examined) in three key language components.
Paper 1: Listening, reading and writing
Paper 2: Writing
Paper 3: Speaking
Entry requirements
Students will need to meet the entry requirements of their chosen pathway:
Pathway 1: Five or more GCSE grades 5-9 (including English Language and Maths) for an A-level study programme
Pathway 2: Five or more GCSE grades 5-9 (aiming for a 5 in English Language and Maths) to study two A-level subjects and one Level 3 Diploma/AAQ
Pathway 3: Five or more GCSE grades 4-9 (resitting English Language or Maths if needed) to study one A-level and two Level 3 Diplomas/AAQs or three Level 3 Diplomas/AAQs
Additional Entry Requirements (for this specific course):
Grade 5 or above in GCSE French or substantial experience of speaking the language either at home or while living abroad.
