Course Summary

This programme offers young people ages 16 – 25 the opportunity to develop personal and social skills as well as specific horticulture skills. College based days will include maintaining the college garden and developing the skills of plant care and landscaping. Young people will also have the chance to develop wood craft skills to maintain sheds, flower boarders and raised beds and enterprise skills for employability.

Other personal and social develop opportunities will include the opportunity to develop life skills that include undertaking a range of vocational tasters including working with Country Park Rangers, art, film, football, sport, music, media, cooking and drama.

Entry requirements

General interest in practical skills and working outside. In addition to the entry qualifications listed, the offer of a place on the course is subject to the outcomes of initial assessment, which will be taken at the College as part of the admissions process. Please note that entry criteria may vary quite significantly between courses at the same level. This is to take account of the specific skills needed for success on particular courses, the length of the course and the requirements for progression to the next level. Entry criteria are given as a guide, and the exact requirements in order to obtain a place on a particular course will be confirmed following attendance at a Welcome Event/Interview.

This programme leads to a City & Guilds level 1 in Practical Horticulture. Young people will also get the chance to take a City & Guilds qualification in maths and English or a functional skills or GCSE depending on their ability and current qualifications on entry.

Young people who are confidence and ready will be able to undertake a work experience with one of the college partners or with carefully selected employers in the local community.
