Course Summary
A level philosophy and ethics is a course which gets you thinking! The course is made up of three distinct units:
Philosophy
Philosophy is about discovering ‘ultimate reality’ and asks questions about why we are here and whether there is anything beyond this world You will have the opportunity to explore the views of different philosophers and their ideas.
Ethics
Ethics is about what is right and wrong and how we make moral decisions. You will study some of the most popular ways of moral decision making and then try them out with issues such as Business Ethics, Euthanasia and Sexual Ethics.
Developments of Christian Thought
DCT is a historical analysis of how a religion has evolved over time and includes feminism, the relationship between religions and the challenge of secularism.

We use a variety of different methods to teach the course and therefore you will be asked to:
Debate key issues
Present ideas to the class
Research Philosophers
Participate in quizzes
Play the role of a particular Philosopher
Create giant class mind maps to link ideas
Write essays
Course Details
How will it be delivered and assessed?
We follow the OCR A-level in Religious Studies. You will sit 3 final examinations at the end of Year 13 where you will be assessed on your knowledge of the course as well as your ability to write critically about each topic. You will demonstrate your ability in the exams through essay writing and we will prepare you for this throughout the duration of the course with regular practice essays. In addition to this, we will support you in developing your knowledge by giving you a knowledge test each half term.
Entry requirements
Five GCSEs grade 4 or above, including grade 6 in Religious Studies
