Course Summary
A-Level Mathematics provides a challenge and looks at deeper understanding of concepts seen at GCSE. In addition, it gives some applied context into Mechanics and Statistics which is useful for many pathways after Sixth Form. We follow the AQA specification. You will study three core parts of maths: Pure, Mechanics and Statistics. Within Pure Maths, we will look at proofs, algebra, functions, coordinate geometry, sequences, series, trigonometry, exponentials, logarithms, differentiation, integration and numerical methods. The topics that are clear recaps and extension from GCSE are algebra, coordinate geometry and trigonometry. In Mechanics, we will explore vectors, quantities and units, kinematics, forces, Newton's laws and moments. In Statistics, we will study sampling, data presentation and interpretation, probability, statistical distributions and hypothesis testing.
The activities you will be engaged in will be
Thinking and developing your intuition as well as exploring and testing your mathematical abilities.
AS and A level Mathematics courses build on familiar mathematical topics learned
at GCSE such as algebra, co-ordinate geometry, trigonometry and probability. New topics introduced at A level include: sequences and series; differentiation and integration, together known as calculus; Newton’s laws of motion; and statistical hypothesis testing.
Students are expected to use technology such as graphical calculators, graphing software and spreadsheets throughout the course.
Independent work is expected, this means reading up on the Integral website and bringing back questions.
