BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Medical Science

This exciting new course aims to develop students applied knowledge of the medical sciences. During this course you will gain an understanding of the body alongside its anatomy and pathology. Exploring cell structure, the nervous system, the heart and lungs and many more of the bodies systems. At the same time you will be developing research and practical skills essential for a career in this area and many others.

Unit 1 - Principles of human physiology, anatomy and pathology

Unit 2 - Health issues and scientific reporting

Unit 3 - Practical microbiology and infectious disease

Optional Unit - a choice of one from three differing topics: diseases, disorders, treatments and therapies, biomedical science, and human reproduction and fertility.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Unit 1 and 2 are run in a similar way to GCSE science — externally assessed (exam) at the end of the year in June. These assessments include short and long answer questions. Unit 2 will require an understanding of health issues and their associated initiatives and reporting.

Unit 3 is set by Pearson, is internally assessed and is based around practical work relating to the effect of antimicrobial agents on the growth of microorganisms. During which will produce a high level report of your experiments.

The optional unit is set by Pearson, and is assessed internally via the production of student reports, analysis and experiments.

A grading of Pass (P), Merit (M), Distinction (D) or Distinction* (D*) is awarded at the end of the course.
