Course Details
The course encourages reflective practices, encouraging a creative and innovative approach to learning. The course allows you to develop both academic and practical skills through applied learning. This includes regular practical lessons, working with a wide variety of foods, visits to Borough market and links with local businesses.
Assessment is through written examination, projects and case studies and so is suitable for all learning styles.
Practical lessons take place most weeks and students are expected to bring ingredients from home. The amount per practical can be sometimes be £5, although every effort is taken to keep costs down. In exchange for this cost, a delicious dish which may be served as part of the family meal is produced. It is acceptable to make small quantities if this fits the family budget more appropriately.
Level 3 food science and nutrition is an equivalent to one A-level and works well with A-level biology, chemistry, mathematics, psychology and the art subjects.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
Year 12: 50% exam, 50% coursework
Year 13: 100% coursework
Entry requirements
Five 5's including English and 4+ in mathematics
Grade 5/5 in GCSE combined science or any two grade 5+ in triple science
If food technology studied at GCSE grade 5+
