Application Instructions

A LEVEL AND LEVEL 3 QUALIFICATIONS

To gain a place on this course students will ideally have at least grade 4 in both English Language and Mathematics and at least three other GCSEs, or equivalent Level 2 qualifications, at grade 5 or above. Some subjects also have additional entry requirements.

All students are to choose 3 subjects from 3 different blocks. Further Mathematics may be taken as a fourth choice.



LEVEL 2 QUALIFICATIONS

Subjects have individual entry requirements.

Students only need to apply for either Bricklaying or Hairdressing.

Course Details

HISTORY

Unit 1C: The Tudors: England, 1485-1603

This unit is a study of the entire 118 years of Tudor rule. In Year 12 students will study the beginning of the Tudor dynasty under Henry VII following the Battle of Bosworth before moving onto the reign of Henry VIII and the break with Rome. In Year 13 students will cover the fascinating reigns of the three children of Henry VIII; Edward VI, Mary I and Elizabeth I.

Unit 2S: The Cold War, c1945-1991

This unit is an in depth study on the Cold War. In Year 12 students will study the Cold War from 1945-63 including the focal points of Berlin and Cuba. In Year 13 students will investigate the later Cold War, beginning with the Vietnam War and finishing with the roles of Reagan and Gorbachev in ending the tension between the USA and the USSR.

Unit 3: Russia, 1855-1953

This coursework unit covers a period of 98 years from the reigns of the last three Tsars, Alexander II, Alexander III and Nicholas II, to the death of Stalin in 1953. Particular attention is given to the implementation of Communism under Lenin and the totalitarian state created by Stalin.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Unit 1C: The Tudors: England, 1485-1603 - Exam 2 ½ hours (40%)

A mix of interpretation and essay questions.

Unit 2S: The Cold War, c1945-1991 - Exam 2½ hours (40%)

A mix of source and essay questions.

Unit 3: Russia, 1881-1991 - Coursework 3500-4500 words (20%)

The focus of this unit is on the concepts of continuity and change.

Grade 5 in History and a Grade 5 English Language.
