Course Summary
This dynamic and creative course offers students the opportunity to explore a wide range of artistic techniques and processes through advanced practical workshops. These experiences help students develop technical skill, creative thinking, and personal expression. Early projects focus on building a strong and varied portfolio, while later in the course students work more independently, developing their own ideas into fully realised personal outcomes.
Course Details
Students will explore and develop skills in:
• Painting – including watercolour, oils, and acrylic, with a focus on expressive and technical approaches
• Drawing – using tonal techniques, pen, charcoal, and coloured pencil to build observational and imaginative skills
• Mixed Media – combining materials and techniques such as layering, collage, stitch, and surface manipulation
• Photography – both digital and traditional, using Photoshop and hand-manipulated editing techniques, as well as working with photography backdrops
• Printmaking – including lino printing and mono printing to explore texture, pattern, and mark-making
• 3D – working with materials such as clay to develop form, texture, and structure
• Textiles – exploring processes like fabric manipulation, stitch techniques, and surface decoration
• Contextual Studies – researching artists, art movements, exhibitions, and galleries to inform and inspire personal work
Entry requirements
Due to the skill-based nature of the course it is a requirement that you have achieved a grade 5 or above in GCSE Art, Photography or Textiles or any equivalent visual arts-based course.
However, a varied portfolio of work with evidence of strong drawing skill would be considered in the absence of an Art & Design GCSE or equivalent.
