Course Summary
Photography is a fast paced and exciting course which challenges students to explore the aesthetic, intellectual and technical aspects of photography. In an ever-developing digital society, it is a course which opens pathways into a multitude of digital industries including media, film and visual arts and provides students with strong critical and analytical communication and independent project management skills sought by many top employers.
Photography develops students’ creativity through a programme of study spanning critical, practical, and theoretical skills. Students are encouraged to investigate the different styles, genres and approaches to photography including some chemical, digital and studio photography, as well as more Fine Art based photographic approaches.
Over the course students produce a portfolio of coursework and outcomes based around a personal theme. Students can choose to produce this digitally but will present this in A3 presentation folders, or in a sketchbook. Students are supported through their projects through 1:1 critiques with the teachers making their experience individualised.
Students will be expected to plan, resource and organise their own photoshoots therefore the ability to work independently is a key skill for success on this course. Observing, refining, analysing and taking experimental risks are also key factors of the course.
Entry requirements
No prior knowledge or qualification is required. However previous experience in a visual based subject at GCSE will be beneficial. It is helpful, but not a requirement, for students to have a camera of their own and access to Photoshop (we do, however provide key pieces of equipment in the department).
