Course Summary
Our new alternative academic qualification in applied medical science forms part of our A-Level programme and will allow you to learn the principles and application of medical science.
On our A-Level programme, you will study three or four subjects. Please apply for three or four subjects and use our course selector here to check what options you can do!
Course Details
Whilst studying this subject, you'll spend time in our newest building, the state-of-the-art School of Nursing Studies; and with our industry trained staff to help you prepare to progress into the industry or into higher education.
What will I study in this subject?
Over the two years, you will study the following mandatory units:
Human anatomy, physiology and pathology; human body systems, cell ultrastructure and how substances are reported
Health issues and scientific reporting; the immune system, it's dysfunction and genetic technologies
Practical microbiology and infection diseases; methods of pathogenicity and infectious agents, growth of microorganisms and health and safety
You will also study one of the following units (to be confirmed):
- Diseases, disorders, treatments and therapies
- Biomedical science
- Human reproduction and fertility
How will it be delivered and assessed?
This subject is assessed by two external examinations, assignments and synoptic assessments.
How many UCAS points can I achieve from this subject?
Our alternative academic qualifications which form part of our A-Level programme qualify for UCAS tariff points to apply for university in the same way as A-Levels. For this subject, you could achieve up to 56 UCAS points (the UCAS tariff points from your other subjects will be added to this, too!) depending on how you are graded:

Entry requirements
You will need:
- 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English and maths and, for this specific subject;
- Either a grade 6 in Science or a grade 5 in each of Science, Maths & English
