A-Level History - Route 2 - State and Society

Everything happening around us today has been influenced by and is a result of what has happened in the past. History can help us predict what could happen in the future. One of the most flexible of qualifications, History provides an excellent pathway to degrees such as History, Law, English and Philosophy, and beyond that to a range of interesting careers. This intellectually rigorous course is an excellent way for students to develop highly sought after and transferable skills. These include being able to effectively communicate complex ideas, the ability to research, analyse and evaluate information, both orally and in writing, and the capacity to make substantiated judgements, all whilst developing independent work skills.

Component 1: The Tudors: England 1485-1603 (40 % A-level)

This option allows students to study in breath issues of change, continuity, cause and consequence in this period through the following questions:

• How did the Tudors restore and develop the powers of the monarchy?

• How effectively was England governed at this time?

• How did English society and economy change at this time and with what effects?

• How far did religious and intellectual ideas change and develop?

• How important was the role of key individuals and groups?

Component 2: 2N Revolution and Dictatorship, Russia 1917-1953 (40% of A-level)

This option provides for the study in depth of the coming and practice of communism in Russia. It explores concepts such as Marxism, communism, Leninism, and Stalinism, ideological control and dictatorship. It also enables students to consider issues of political authority, the power of individuals and the inter-relationship of governmental and economic and social change.

Component 3: Historical Investigation (20% of A-level)

An essay of 3,000-5,000 words on a topic of your choice relating to The USA, 1865-1968.

Students must have achieved at least five strong passes (to at least Grade 5) at GCSE level, including English Language, Maths and History.
