Course Summary

At German A level you will learn about aspects of German culture and contemporary society, looking at diversity and the benefits it brings. You will study German-speaking artistic culture, including music and cinema, and learn about political engagement and who wields political power in the German-speaking world.

Would you like to be able to truly enjoy, understand and discuss a German film in depth and reflect on the issues faced in contemporary German society? Would you like to find out more about the challenges surrounding multiculturalism in German speaking countries? Have you ever been to one of Germany’s many festivals or celebrated Christmas and New Year the German way? Explore this through virtual and/or real-life encounters.


Course Details

You will explore the influence of the past on present-day German-speaking communities. Throughout the course, you will learn the language in context of German-speaking countries and the issues and influences which have shaped them. You will study texts and film and have the opportunity to carry out independent research on an area of your choice.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Students will be assessed by sitting two exams and a non-exam speaking assessment.

Paper 1 (2 hours and 30 minutes) will assess listening, reading and writing

Paper 2 (2 hours) will assess writing from set texts and/or film.

Entry requirements

A grade 5 at GCSE in English, Maths and German

Your next steps...

Opportunities to study and work abroad are significant. You could study a Single or combined Honours Degree in German with Engineering, German with Business or German with Law. You could teach languages in schools or further education, work in tourism, undertake translation and interpretation work or even become an intelligence analyst, where you can use your language skills to gather and analyse information.
