Course Summary
If you want to change the world in which we live, you must first understand it, and this is exactly what Geography allows you to do. The course covers a mixture of physical and human Geography topics and explores how they are interconnected. With this knowledge you could be the one to change mankind’s future and save our planet from destruction!
Studying Geography gives you the opportunity to explore some of the big issues facing the world today, and in particular how we manage these issues. You will have the opportunity to study some of the inequalities that plague the world today and consider how they can be overcome. Geography is a highly valued subject among universities and employers and is regarded as a facilitating A-Level.
During the course you will have the opportunity to take part in a 3 day fieldwork training course to Cranedale, North Yorkshire, develop your research and independent study skills, as well as explore the use of GIS and statistical analysis, making you a well-rounded and highly skilled individual.
Enrichment
Fieldwork is a compulsory part of the course and it is expected that all students take part in 4 days of fieldwork.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
The Geography A Level is assessed by 3 exams and a non examined assessment (independent investigation worth 20% of your marks).
• Paper 1 is the Physical Systems paper and covers the topics of Earth’s Life Support Systems and coastal landscape systems.
• Paper 2 is the Human interactions paper and covers the topics of Changing Spaces; Making Places, global migration and human rights.
• Paper 3 is the Geographical debates paper and covers two units, one called ‘Hazardous Earth’ (volcanoes and earthquakes) and the other ‘The Future of food’.
Entry requirements
Students must have achieved at least five strong passes (at least Grade 5) at GCSE level, including English Language, Maths and Geography.
