Course Summary

This Apprenticeship Standard is designed for Machinists who are involved in highly skilled, complex and precision work, machining components from specialist materials using conventional and/or CNC machine tools such as centre lathes, vertical and horizontal milling machines, horizontal and cylindrical grinding machines, electro discharge machines, single and multi- axis CNC machine tools centres. They will be expected to be able set up, operate and adjust/edit equipment settings as applicable to the machine tool being used. When using CNC equipment they will be expected to be able to produce, prove and/or edit programmes. During and on completion of the machining operations they will be expected to measure and check the components being produced and make adjustments to the equipment/programme to ensure components meet the required specification.


Apprentices will attend college on day-release for 1 or 2 days a week during term time for 3 years.


Suitable job roles include: Manual Machinist, Toolmaker, CNC Machinist, Gear Cutter, Center Lathe Turner

There is no upper age limit for apprenticeships making it a course ideal for those looking to start a career in a particular sector and looking to get qualifications that recognise their experience and gives them opportunity to progress further in their career.


How will it be delivered and assessed?

This programme is fully delivered in the workplace and focuses on developing the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to succeed in an administrative role. Assessment takes place throughout the programme using a variety of methods, including observations, professional discussions, questioning, witness testimonies and workplace evidence. At the end of the programme, learners will go through Gateway and complete the three components of the End-Point Assessment.


1. Component 1 – Knowledge Test

Multiple-choice Knowledge Test assessing the technical content.


2. Component 2 – Portfolio-based Interview

Portfolio-based Interview around the evidence requirements that demonstrate achievement of the portfolio-based skills and behaviours


3. Component 3 – Practical Demonstration

A practical assessment with questions the End Point Assessment Organisation


Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification; however, learners must be employed in a suitable role and hold GCSE Grade 4 or above in English and Mathematics, unless they are aged 19 or over.
