Course Summary
This qualification forms part of the industry-recognised Installation and Maintenance Electrician Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard.
Apprentices will develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to work competently as an installation or maintenance electrician. The programme combines college-based learning with practical experience and assessment in the workplace.
Apprentices will complete the EAL Level 3 Electrotechnical Qualification (601/7345/2) and build a portfolio of workplace evidence to demonstrate occupational competence.
The qualification includes knowledge and performance units covering health, safety and environmental considerations, organising and overseeing work, terminating and connecting conductors, inspection, testing and commissioning, fault diagnosis and rectification, electrical scientific principles, BS 7671 Wiring Regulations, electrical design and electrical maintenance.
Apprentices will develop their occupational competence within the workplace and provide evidence from real working environments. Knowledge is assessed through a combination of online and written assessments.
The programme typically takes 54 months to complete, including End-Point Assessment.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
End point assessment
We want you to achieve to the very best of your ability at CRC. To make this happen, we offer both learning and personal support from specialist staff, tailored to meet your specific needs.
There are three stages of assessment:
1. On-programme stage – Completion of knowledge and performance units through online and written assessments, workplace observations and workplace evidence.
2. Gateway stage – Successful completion of the Level 3 Electrotechnical Qualification and the required knowledge, skills and behaviours of the apprenticeship standard, alongside English and maths requirements where applicable and the required off-the-job training. The apprentice, employer and training provider must also confirm readiness for AM2S v1.
3. End-point assessment (graded) – Completion of the AM2S v1 End-Point Assessment, which includes practical assessment and questioning alongside an open-book multiple-choice knowledge assessment. The assessment is independently delivered and assesses the apprentice's occupational competence against the requirements of the apprenticeship standard.
Entry requirements
Remember, an apprenticeship is a job so the hiring employer may have additional criteria that will have to be met alongside CRC’s entry criteria.
Apprentices are paid a wage by the employer. Your employer is required to give you a contract of employment, which will include holiday entitlement and all other benefits. Your job role should provide you with the opportunities to develop the Standard’s skills, knowledge, and behaviours.
Entry onto the L3 Apprenticeship Standard requires GCSE grade 4 or above in Maths and English.
All applicants will be interviewed and complete an initial assessment for maths and English, and the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to become a professional Installation and maintenance electrician. The offer of a place on the course is subject to the outcomes of initial assessment, which will be taken at the College as part of the admissions process.
Your next steps...
On successful completion of the apprenticeship, apprentices can progress their career within the electrotechnical sector and undertake further specialist qualifications, which may include:
EAL Level 3 Award in the Initial Verification and Certification of Electrical Installations – 600/4337/4
EAL Level 3 Award in the Periodic Inspection, Testing and Certification of Electrical Installations – 600/4338/6
EAL Level 3 Award in the In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment (PAT) – 600/4340/4
EAL Level 4 Award in the Design and Verification of Electrical Installations – 601/8231/3
Further specialist training in areas such as electric vehicle charging, low-carbon technologies and other emerging electrical technologies
Further or higher-level study within the electrotechnical and building services sector.
Successful completion can support progression within the industry as an Installation Electrician or Maintenance Electrician, with opportunities to develop into more specialist or senior roles.
