Course Summary
VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Hairdressing is a technical level qualification aimed at learners who wish to pursue a career as an employed and/or self-employed hairdresser/stylist.
This course is equivalent to an A level.
The following A level subject areas will compliment this qualification by further broadening your knowledge and skills in the context of hair and beauty:

Course Details
Throughout this qualification, learners will develop their knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology and health and safety. They will also develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to consult with clients, provide a range of cutting and colouring services, and set, dress and finish the hair. Learners will develop their communication and customer service skills, their awareness of environmental sustainability and their commercial skills, all of which are valued highly by employers. Problem solving and research skills will also be developed.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
Learners must achieve all mandatory units which include:
- Health and safety in the salon
- Hairdressing consultation
- Hair cutting services
- Hair colouring services
- Setting and dressing services
- Blow-drying and finishing service
In addition to completing mandatory units, you are required to complete one optional unit. A variety of optional units are available which include (this list is not exhaustive): colour correction services, hair and scalp treatments, hair extension services, men's cutting services, occasion hair services, managing a commercial column and social media marketing.
There will be 2 external examinations, graded practical assessment for each unit, a graded synoptic assessment, and a service portfolio.
Entry requirements
All students are required to achieve a minimum of 5 GCSE’s at grade 4
This subject has additional requirements of:
- Grade 4-9 in English or Maths
Your next steps...
When you achieve this qualification you are eligible to become a State Registered Hairdresser (SRH) with The Hairdressing Council.
As a senior hairdresser/hairstylist, you could progress directly into employment in a variety of contexts, which include:
Commercial salons, specialist African type hair salons, independent/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings, television, film, theatre and media, armed services, HM prison service, cruise liners, hospitals/care homes
Whilst the primary purpose of this qualification is to prepare you for employment, you may choose to develop your knowledge and skills further by completing a specialist qualification at Level 4.
