Course Summary
This course is designed both for those who are experienced performers and composers who may be aiming to study music at university/conservatoire level and for those who have a general interest in music which they wish to develop.
Course Details
Core
All students follow a course in musical perception and analysis which involves studying a set work in addition to a wide range of music from different historical periods, cultures and parts of the world. They also carry out an independent musical investigation into the relationship between two identifiable and distinct musical genres from any tradition, culture or part of the world.
Higher Level
- Solo performance: Apresentation of one or more solo recitals on a single instrument or voice. Any instrument, voice, style or musical genre is permitted.
- Composition: three compositions in any style or genre. A wide range of media is permitted including traditional or electric instruments, computer generated sounds and digital sound sources or modifiers.
Standard Level
There are a number of options. You must choose one of the following:
- Solo performance: a presentation of one or more solo recitals on a single instrument or voice. Any instrument, voice, style or musical genre is permitted.
- Composition: two compositions in any style or genre. A wide range of media is permitted including traditional or electric instruments, computer generated sounds and digital sound sources or modifiers.
- Group performance: for those with a general interest in music or those without much prior experience in performance. Two or more public performances as part of an ensemble must be recorded.
- This course is ideal for students who wish to develop their musical abilities in a range of areas, to pursue their own interests in more depth and to discover a wide range of music in a variety of styles from different traditions and parts of world.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
Entry requirements
Student must have some aptitude and expertise in music, whether with instrument(s) and/or with voice as instrument. Reading music is an advantage.
International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme We require at least seven GCSEs with an average of Grade 5, including English Language and Maths. For subjects you wish to take at higher level you will need at least a grade 6. International Baccalaureate Career Programme We require at least five subjects at GCSE grade 4 or higher, ideally including Mathematics and English and preferably with a grade 5 in your area of specialism. Strong interest in the vocational BTEC subject will need to be in evidence at the guidance meeting.
