Course Summary

Learning for Life is for young people aged 16 - 24 who have severe learning difficulties. This pathway concentrates on developing communication skills, community participation, building basic skills and skills for life, so that each person is able to make progress in their independence and ability to speak up about their own choices.

Learning for life is a programme that young people can access for up to three years. The programmes are four days per week 9am to 3pm.

The curriculum is varied and builds at every opportunity on developing communication skills. The curriculum is rich and varied with art, music, drama, home skills, cooking, wider world and basic skills sessions. English and maths are embedded throughout the programme to enable each person to gain skills for life.

Entry requirements

Most young people accessing the learning for Life programme will have an EHCP. There are no entry requirement.

Early application is highly recommended so that the college can work with your present setting to develop a phased transition to help you settle quickly into college life. In addition to the entry qualifications listed, the offer of a place on the course is subject to the outcomes of initial assessment, which will be taken at the College as part of the admissions process. Please note that entry criteria may vary quite significantly between courses at the same level. This is to take account of the specific skills needed for success on particular courses, the length of the course and the requirements for progression to the next level. Entry criteria are given as a guide, and the exact requirements in order to obtain a place on a particular course will be confirmed following attendance at a Welcome Event/Interview.
