Health & Social Care AAQ Level 3 (H125)

If you are interested in working with children, vulnerable adults or in the medical field, then this is the subject for you. Learning about the human body; the legislation surrounding caring for people (and yourself); how to communicate effectively; reproduction and childbirth; and the importance of adequate nutrition and how to achieve this. The course is broad and fascinating with a mix of coursework and exams.

The department organises talks by Health and Social Care professionals.

Unit 1: Building positive relationships in health and social care (exam unit) An introduction to the different relationships within the HSC sector. You will consider how different factors can impact on the building of relationships.

Unit 2: Equality, diversity and rights in health and social care (coursework unit) This looks at the implications of diversity on practice and the effects of discriminatory practice on individuals.

Unit 4: Anatomy and Physiology (exam unit) This unit introduces you to the basic structure and functions of the body systems involved in everyday activities and maintenance of health, including cardiovascular, respiratory and digestive systems.

Unit 10: Nutrition for Health (coursework unit) This unit gives an understand the impact of nutrition on wellbeing and health. Rising levels of obesity are leading to increases in heart conditions, diabetes and liver disease.

Unit 13: Sexual Health, Reproduction and Early Development Stages (coursework unit) This unit looks at health and wellbeing from childhood and through the different stages of adulthood.

Students must have achieved at least five strong passes (to at least Grade 5) at GCSE, including English Language and Maths.
