Food Science and Nutrition

Students should submit applications by 19 December 2025.

Applications will remain open throughout the year and late applications will be considered; however, students should be aware that they may not receive their preferred choices if a late application is received.

Once applications have been received, all applicants will be invited for an interview to discuss their application and ensure that their subject choices are suitable.

Are you interested in understanding more about the food that we eat and the science behind the cooking process? Do you wonder what happens to the structure of meat as it's cooked or why an egg goes solid when boiled? Food Science and Nutrition is a multidisciplinary subject where we study the structures of nutrients, dietary related diseases, manufacturing of different products and food safety systems.

You will get the opportunity to experience a wide range of practical techniques, such as caramelisation, pasta and dessert making, and preparing complex dishes.

5 GCSE passes at grade 4 or above including English and Maths.

An understanding of food science and nutrition is relevant to many industries and job roles. Care providers and nutritionists in hospitals use this knowledge, as do sports coaches and fitness instructors. Hotels and restaurants, food manufacturers and government agencies also use this understanding to develop menus, food products and policies that support healthy eating initiatives. Many employment opportunities within the field of food science and nutrition are available to graduates.
