Course Summary
Studying criminology will enable you to develop an understanding of the different types of crime committed, the influences on perceptions of crime and why some crimes go unreported. Exploring how media campaigns may affect society’s understanding of crimes is key and you will have the opportunity to plan your own ‘campaign for change’. Learning about different theoretical perspectives which try to explain why crime is committed in the first place.
The journey from crime scene to courtroom, will enable you to answer what happens to a suspect once charged by the Police and the Crown Prosecution Service? What safeguards are in place to ensure a suspect has a fair trial? Exploring the way in which the court system within the UK ensures suspects are processed fairly and the way sentencing and punishment meeting the aims of punishment, such as retribution or rehabilitation.
A qualification in criminology will open doors into many job roles within the criminal justice
sector, social and probation work and sociology and psychology.
