Course Summary

Music is constantly evolving, inspiring creativity and expression in a way that no other subject can. AQA have designed a relevant and contemporary A-level qualification that offers students the chance to study a wide range of musical genres. This A-level brings listening, performance and composition to life in new and engaging ways, and links to the world around us like never before.

This course enables students to expand and refine their skills as musicians while simultaneously developing their knowledge and appreciation of music.

Course Details

Topics covered are:

Area of Study 1: Western classical tradition 1650–1910 (compulsory)

  • Baroque: the solo concert
  • Classical: the operas of Mozart
  • Romantic: the piano music of Chopin, Brahms and Grieg

Area of Study 2: Pop Music

Area of Study 5: Jazz

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Performance coursework – a solo and/or ensemble recital lasting a minimum of ten minutes in duration (35%)

Composition coursework = 1 free-choice and 1 set-brief composition, lasting a minimum of four and a half minutes in duration (25%)

Listening and Appraisal Written Exam – 2 hours and 30 minutes (40%)

Entry requirements

To study this course at A Level, students must achieve a Grade 6 or above in GCSE Music, as well as Grade 5 or above on an instrument/singing from ABRSM/Trinity or a similar exam board.

For students without GCSE Music or a Grade 5, an audition and music theory test will be required.

Equipment required

Regular access to an instrument outside school (if you play an instrument), 1-2-1 instrument or singing lessons either inside or outside school

In addition to the music specific content outlined above, this qualification gives learners transferable and higher-order skills that are valued by higher education providers and employers. It also gives learners an opportunity to focus on their personal vocal/instrumental technique. This qualification will support entry to higher education courses in a wide range of disciplines, particularly music, depending on the subjects taken alongside it.
