Course Summary

The key to a rich and influential literature and to a range of modern languages.

Through Latin you will gain access to a rich literature, giving rise to debate on Roman poetry, history, philosophy and culture. These are not seen in isolation, but are compared with modern literature, events and ideas.

About the Course

In Latin, you will learn to think logically and analytically about language and literature. You will develop a critical approach to ideas of Roman society and compare them with those current today. The opportunity to read original Latin texts written more than twenty centuries ago by authors such as Virgil, Cicero, Caesar, Ovid, Tacitus, and Livy are challenging but rewarding.

Although the course focuses on language and literature, historical context and Roman ideas and values are studied as part of the background to literature and language. Some students choose to study Classics at universities, others medicine, law or modern languages. It is a rare qualification, offered by few state schools and colleges, valued by universities and employers alike.

Opportunities unique to this course

We regularly welcome academics and guest speakers to share their expertise. Latin students are also encouraged to enter national competitions, both in essay writing and Live Latin Reading, in which our previous students have excelled.
