Course Summary

The structure of the A Level Photography course is similar to that of GCSE. Students develop their understanding of photographic processes, techniques and concepts through practical work and critical study. They build a personal portfolio, exploring themes and ideas that reflect their individual interests.

Course Details

Students explore traditional and digital photography, learning about:

Camera techniques and settings

Composition and visual storytelling

Studio and location photography


Image editing using Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom

Historical and contemporary photographers

Personal investigation and independent project work

Developing a professional portfolio of creative outcomes

How will it be delivered and assessed?

The Eduqas A Level in Photography is a two-year linear qualification and consists of two components:


Component 1: Personal Investigation, 60% of qualification, internally assessed and externally moderated.


Component 2: Externally Set Assignment, 40% of qualification, internally assessed and externally moderated

Entry requirements

To study A Level Photography, students require a GCSE Grade 6 or equivalent in Photography, Art and Design or a related subject. Students who have not studied a Visual Arts GCSE may be required to attend an interview and present a portfolio of work.

Equipment required

Essential: General art and design materials (pencils, pens, sketchbook, ruler, etc.), A portfolio folder to store and transport work, Access to a computer for research and coursework completion, Recommended: DSLR or mirrorless camera, SD card and card reader, Tripod, Camera bag, Drawing tablet (useful for digital editing and image manipulation), School Provision: Access to Adobe Creative Cloud software, including Photoshop and Lightroom, Studio lighting and photographic equipment, Printing facilities, Cameras and specialist equipment (subject to availability), Students do not need to own professional equipment to be successful on the course. Access to a camera is beneficial, but alternative arrangements can be made where necessary.
