Course Summary
Chemistry course covers a wide variety of Physical, Inorganic and Organic Chemistry topics designed to build on work covered at GCSE and to form an excellent basis for further study.
As well as enhancing your knowledge of Chemistry the course aims to develop analytical and problem-solving skills as well as practical technique. The content of the course reflects new advances in analytical techniques as well as an increased focus on applications of Chemistry in medical and pharmaceutical contexts.
Physical Chemistry Topics include atomic structure, bonding, rates of reaction, acids and pH, chemical equilibrium and thermodynamics.
Inorganic Chemistry Topics are related to understanding patterns in the Periodic Table, complex ions and chemical tests.
Organic Chemistry Topics are related to homologous series such as carboxylic acids and amines, polymer structures and analytical techniques used in identifying organic compounds
Course Details
A Level Chemistry is the study of the substances that make up our world, the reactions they undergo, and the energy changes involved. You’ll explore the structure of atoms and molecules, the patterns that govern the Periodic Table, and the chemical processes that underpin life, industry and the environment.
Through a balance of theory and practical work, you’ll develop strong problem-solving skills, precision in the laboratory, and the ability to think critically about evidence. Chemistry combines naturally with Biology, Physics and Mathematics, and it is a key subject for those considering medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, pharmacy, biochemistry, or chemical engineering.
If you enjoy investigating how and why reactions happen, and want to apply your knowledge to both everyday and global challenges, A Level Chemistry offers a fascinating and rewarding pathway.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
The qualification is assessed through 3 written exams at the end of Year 13.
Paper 1: Periodic Table, Elements and Physical Chemistry, 2hr 15 mins (37% of total)
Paper 2: Synthesis and Analytical Techniques 2 hr 15 mins (37% of total)
