Overview

You will gain a strong grasp of core science concepts and be introduced to standard laboratory equipment and techniques.

Through practical tasks you will develop proficiency in quantitative analytical techniques. You will also learn the essential skills underpinning practical scientific investigation. 

Students studying the Extended Diploma will go on to investigate a scientific organization, gaining an understanding of how it operates. 

The range of core science concepts will be built upon and this knowledge will be applied to vocational contexts. 

You will consider contemporary issues in science such as stem cell therapy, genetic engineering and developments in nanotechnology. 

You will also undertake your own investigative project comprised of a scientific literature review, planning, practical work and an evaluative report.

Details

Applied Science will provide you with a broad range of skills to prepare you for employment or higher education. You will build on your previous studies of science by widening your knowledge of scientific investigation and practical techniques. You will develop the numeracy skills required in a scientific setting, find out about working in the science industry and examine perceptions of science in the wider community. You will work as an individual and in small groups on research projects.

- 58% coursework.

Entry requirements

At least 5 GCSEs at Grade 4 including GCSE English. 

2 GCSEs at Grade 5 in GCSE Combined Science or 2 GCSEs in GCSE Biology, GCSE Chemistry or GCSE Physics. 

Grade 5 in GCSE Maths.

Your next steps...

Qualifications in Applied Science can lead to a career in a range of areas including forensic, medical, laboratory or industrial science, depending on the specialist units taught.

The course also provides progression to higher education courses such as forensic chemistry, biological sciences or audiology. Students who recently completed the course are studying Forensic Science, also at Anglia Ruskin, Climate Change at the University of East Anglia, Biology at Lincoln University, Diagnostic Radiography at Suffolk University and Palaeontology at Portsmouth University.
