The course is designed to provide learners with a broad introduction to the Hair & Beauty sector, equipping learners with underpinning knowledge and skills specific to the sector alongside a range of transferable employability skills.
The nationally recognised qualification gained is structured to allow learners to develop essential skills and knowledge in a salon environment and is suitable for learners with moderate learning difficulties and/or disabilities. The learners also have an additional session each week where they spend time looking at work readiness and employability skills. Students will have the opportunity to use the salons in the Vancouver building for the practical units in which they will gain experience in shampoo and conditioning, hand care and skin care.
Assessment is an on-going process and consistent throughout the academic year, this is evident via an initial screening process and then regularly via the Personal Development Plan.Learners are assessed on an individual basis by the tutors and through the verification of completed portfolio units. The online PDP system allows for the learner to log in and view their progress and targets so they are always aware of their achievement to date.Three progress reviews and regular staff meetings ensure that all the assessment and review process continues to map individual progression.
Whilst there are no formal entry requirements, students are required to show a willingness to learn, participate in and develop skills in a college environment.Students will also need to be interviewed. Following an interview the learner will have the opportunity to attend a taster session to determine suitability for the course and to ensure that their needs are met.
