Overview

Businesses are at the heart of the UK economy: innovating new products, meeting customer needs, developing the skills of their employees and creating wealth for local communities.

Our Applied Business courses will give you an excellent understanding of how a business works by teaching you about the creative elements of marketing, motivating people and managing resources such as money. You will also learn the psychological elements of understanding customers and employees decision making elements of suggesting strategies and plans. Our teaching staff will help you to develop impressive skills in presenting professional work documents, using work-based IT software, participating in discussions, engaging in teamwork and writing for specific business audiences, customers and managers.

You'll spend time carrying out independent research and building professional projects using lesson time to create your own presentations. The work you perform in class will enable you to showcase a range of skills to prospective employers and prove that you have the ability to carry out a variety of business procedures relevant to any workplace.

This course is equivalent of studying 1 A Level.

Details

You will touch on the creative elements of marketing, motivating people, managing resources and psychologically understanding customers.

  • Year 1: You will investigate the purpose, type and size of local and international business, giving you an understanding of how businesses grow and develop. You will then explore how businesses use, manage and balance their financial resources to pay employees and make their product. You will be introduced to the world of marketing, conducting your own market research and developing a marketing plan. Finally, you will learn how to motivate your employees to work hard and stay in your business; looking at the techniques used by businesses to plan how many employees, what skills and what roles they need.

  • Year 2: You will develop work-based skills such as teamwork, idea development, formulating career plans, event management and creative promotions. The year focuses on teaching you skills that will complement higher study or employment after Long Road.
You will enjoy and benefit from the Business Diploma if you are interested in the business stories you hear in the media and programmes such as ‘Dragons’ Den’, are able to write fluently, are willing to do presentations, group work, work experience; enjoy working with numbers to interpret and understand the financial side of business.  

How will it be delivered?

You will be assessed by a combination of internally-assessed assignments and externally-set and marked assessments. 

Entry requirements

At least 5 grade 4s or equivalent in a range of subjects at GCSE level, including English and in business studies if taken.
